It has earned numerous pages of discussions over the internet – how important it is for the website to have a good design in many aspects, not just on the visuals. Some website owners have committed a mistake of entrusting the design of their websites to non-experienced web designers who have no full grasp of the different elements needed to be incorporated in the design aside from the usual and standard layout or format requirements.
Good website design is more than just the right text format, or right box layouts, or the right images and photos to represent the content. A good website design encompasses technical aspects as well as SEO aspects, which means seamlessly fusing together all the different elements to make people or users attracted to your website and have that desire to return and revisit because of the excellent user experience they had with your website.
Some of the signs of a poorly designed website can be obvious and glaring. Here are ten of them:
- Hard to Load Content. Users normally wait no more than 3 seconds for a webpage to load before they hit the “close” or return button. Expect your visitors to be impatient when it comes to accessing contents of a site. If your website takes more than 3 clicks before the information or content pops on the screen, users will not stay a second longer and eventually not visit your site again. A good website design is easy to navigate around its content.
- Poor Content Crafting. Users are specifically annoyed reading contents with innumerable spelling and grammar errors. It gives an impression of how little time and effort are put into the contents of the site. There’s nothing more professional than a well-crafted content, in perfect English, with no spelling or grammar inconsistencies.
- Poor use of Frames. Frames are almost no longer used in most web designs these days considering the numerous other web design elements available for more creative use and function. Frames should be avoided because they make web pages difficult to bookmark and refresh.
- Improper Use of Loud Colors. Bold and loud colors should be avoided because they tend to scare visitors away. Websites in neon colors will never get their visitors stay on the page one second longer. Lack of seriousness is the impression users have when they see those loud colors.
- Limited Web Browser Compatibility. If your website runs only in one browser, it means your web designer has very limited capabilities. Most websites are optimized to run in multiple web browsers so that they can capture all audiences.
- Overly Animated. While animation may appeal to the younger audiences, this just distracts the visitors from the site and the purpose of their visit. Used in moderation, animation can enhance the appeal of your site. Don’t over-do.
- Use of Under Construction Signs. Users who see “Site Under Construction” when they access a page on a website know that the website has no content for that particular page. This creates an unprofessional image. If forced to use this sign, make sure there is a date when visitors can check the page again.
- Scrolling Text. This is not at all appealing so it should not be used.
- Use of Graphical Counters on your Site. This is another reason for visitors not to stay on your site because graphical counters are distracting and steal the attention from the desired areas of the visitors.
- Use of Loud Music. Users get annoyed by sudden music or sound blasting off the screen when a site is accessed. It is especially irritating if the users cannot find the “off” button easily.
